Car not starting: what to tell a garage
A car that will not start can have several causes. A click, slow cranking or normal cranking without starting are useful observations, but none confirms a diagnosis on its own.
Observe from a safe place
Note what happens when you follow the normal starting procedure in your owner’s manual. Record warning messages and whether the dashboard lights appear. Avoid repeated starting attempts.
Possible causes to discuss
A garage may need to assess the battery and electrical connections, starting system, key recognition or other vehicle-specific systems. Electric vehicles use different starting and high-voltage systems; do not open or touch those components.
Safe checks
Check that you are using the correct key and the normal gear, brake or clutch position described in your manual. You can read the fuel or charge display. Do not bypass safety switches, bridge terminals or attempt roadside electrical repairs.
When to stop and get help
If there is smoke, a burning smell, a leak or an unsafe roadside position, stop troubleshooting and seek appropriate assistance. Ask support about recovery availability; do not assume the vehicle can be towed by any method.
